Our Story

1997 Eventing Dreams

In 1997, as a study abroad student who had just arrived in England, I spotted a small ad in Chronicle of the Horse classifieds that simply asked, “Americans Going to Burghley?” My heart raced—YES PLEASE! Though I called just a week before the event and accommodation was fully booked, the generous woman on the other end of the line must have heard the desperation in my voice. She took pity on this horse crazy young eventer and welcomed me into her family’s guest room.

What followed was pure magic: Jane Thorpe-Codman secured Burghley tickets, arranged transportation and meals, and even found me a borrowed horse for fox hunting in the English countryside. She’s been my British Mum every since and I truly felt like the luckiest American eventer in England!

When I arrived at her doorstep that first night—exhausted from missed trains and wrong taxis, dragging two oversized suitcases down cobblestone streets far too late in the evening—I had no idea this chance encounter would spark three decades of friendship. That single Chronicle of the Horse advertisement led to countless return trips to Burghley and other major international competitions, friendships with fellow eventing enthusiasts from around the world, and ultimately, the original inspiration for Optimum Time in 2025.

2025 Sharing the Dream

Eventing isn’t just a casual sport—it’s a passion that connects hearts and souls across continents. It’s a community of shared love for the bond and trust we have with our horses. Our fellow eventing enthusiasts—professional riders, amateur riders, devoted fans, and patient spouses—are among the most wonderful people to travel and share adventures with. We created Optimum Time to help others discover the same life-changing experiences that have enriched our lives for almost 30 years.

I hope to see you cheering on the riders and having the time of your life at an event soon!
